TU Dublin Re-Brand

College Project

The Technological University Dublin, also known as TUD, Identity has been developed with close relation with the client in a educational and collaborative manner. The logo represents a trinity of colleges combined together using hexagons to represent a hive, a community, being modified and expanded upon. This was done to represent a number of concepts covered during project research like unity, community, collaboration, technology, innovation and education.

Primary Identity
Secondary Identity

The identity is made up of 2 components. The mark and the typography, with the typography being split into a synonym and the name of the course, both in English and Irish. The mark represents 3 hexagons which reflect the unity of 3 colleges. The synonym allows an easy way to recognize the University and connect with the mark. The typography simply states what the college is. The synonym and the type are separated by 2 variants of the same font with the synonym being graphically altered to be more formal with a modern twist to it, and the type is more thin and smaller in size to form a pleasant but dynamic composition.

There are 2 variants of the arrangement to suit different circumstances that it may be used in. There is an all black variation, an all white variation and the colour variation. The white can be used on the 3 colours found in the mark

Identity Variants

Colour

I used 3 colours to establish a primary version that works with 2 variations of the identity. The colours red, black and grey are present in both versions. A white background is the only one that can have the full colour identity as well as the all black version as seen before the if the background is of any other colour it has to be white. I chose those colours because they are formal, modern and complement each other well, forming a hive like appearance. It links to technology, science, engineering, art and the idea of a University, a serious institution. It also makes it look modern and engaging. Make sure all colour is in CMYK for printing.

Typography

This identity uses the Futura PT typeface and the Bodoni MT typeface. It uses 3 variants of Futura and 1 of Bodoni. Its a simple yet very customizable font that is easy to read but also stands out and can be unique. It was primarily chosen because of how it compliments the mark of the identity and how it can be both formal and modern. It was also found to be quite progressive, depending on the use and need of type. It can save and create space with it’s ability to condense itself. Booni is only used for the acronym which is cut in half with futura added on top.

Bold

Bodoni MT Bold was used for the TUD acronym and so was Futura MT book. Book was used for the Irish version of the college name and Heavy was used for the English version to form a nice composition. Bold can be used for subheadings, heavy is more suitable for highlighting words.
